Fiberglass Construction & Finish Options

We mold each Astro shell from a single piece of fiberglass-reinforced polymer, eliminating the seams and rivets that eventually leak on aluminum caps. The resin matrix resists dents, won’t corrode in salt or humidity, and holds paint better than metal surfaces.

Factory paint matching is available for Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Ram, Toyota, and Nissan trucks manufactured within the past decade. We use automotive-grade urethane paint applied in our climate-controlled booths, then cure each shell for 48 hours before final assembly. Our standard primer-gray finish works for budget builds or customers planning custom graphics.

Side Door & Window Configuration
Sizing & fit

Side Door & Window Configuration

We install two side-swinging doors with full-frame weather stripping that seals against dust and rain. Each door uses a stainless steel rotary latch keyed to match your truck’s factory ignition – one key operates the shell and your vehicle.

The rear sliding window rides on an aluminum track with bronze bushings for smooth operation after years of use. We pre-install a gas strut that holds the window open at any position without slamming shut. The window glass is DOT-approved automotive safety glass – the same material used in truck cab windows.

Mounting System & Bed Compatibility

We use a bolt-through clamp system that secures the shell to your truck bed rails without drilling holes in the bed itself. Each clamp applies pressure through a rubber gasket that compresses against the rail, creating a weathertight seal and vibration-dampening cushion.

The Astro fits trucks with standard 6.5-foot and 8-foot beds. We manufacture model-specific brackets for Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan beds. The shell sits flush with the top of the bed rails – no gap or overhang.

Perfect fit on my 2021 F-150
I installed the Astro on my 6.5-foot bed by myself in about an hour. The clamps lined up perfectly with the bed rails and the finish matches my truck’s magnetic gray paint. I’ve had it for eight months through rain and snow – zero leaks.

Much lighter than my old aluminum cap
Switching from a heavy aluminum cap to the Astro made a noticeable difference in how my Silverado handles. I can actually feel the weight reduction when accelerating, and I’m getting about 1.5 mpg better on the highway.

Great for camping gear storage
We keep our camping bins, coolers, and fishing rods locked in the Astro shell year-round. The side doors make it easy to grab gear without climbing into the bed. My only complaint is I wish the dome light was a little brighter.

Weather sealing is excellent
I live in the Pacific Northwest where it rains 200 days a year. The Astro keeps everything bone dry even during heavy storms. The weather stripping around the doors is thick and seals tight when you close the latches.

Professional paint match
I ordered the factory paint option for my Ram 1500 in Patriot Blue. The color match is perfect – you can’t tell where the truck ends and the shell begins. The clear coat has held up great after two years of sun exposure.

Installation was easier than expected
I was nervous about installing a truck cap myself but the instructions were clear and all the hardware fit perfectly. The hardest part was lifting the shell onto the bed – definitely get a second person to help with that step.

Astro Camper Top Questions

Yes, the Astro mounting clamps accommodate spray-in bed liners up to 0.25 inches thick on the bed rail surface. Most spray-in liners like Line-X and Rhino Lining fall within this tolerance. You won’t need to grind or trim the liner where the clamps attach.

If you have a drop-in plastic bed liner, check that it doesn’t extend above the top of your bed rails. Some drop-in liners have a tall front wall that may interfere with the shell’s front panel. You can usually trim the liner’s front edge to create clearance.

The Astro weighs approximately 140 pounds for a standard 6.5-foot bed configuration, making it about 60 pounds lighter than comparable aluminum truck caps. The 8-foot bed version weighs around 165 pounds.

This weight advantage comes from fiberglass construction, which delivers the same structural strength as aluminum at a lower mass. The lighter weight improves fuel economy and reduces the load on your truck’s rear suspension.

The Astro’s fiberglass roof can support aftermarket crossbars rated for up to 150 pounds of evenly distributed static weight. We recommend using crossbar systems that clamp to the shell’s rain gutters rather than drilling directly into the fiberglass.

For heavier loads like roof-top tents or large cargo boxes, consider our Summit or Everest models, which have integrated roof rack mounting points and reinforced roof structures designed for expedition gear.

Every Astro includes a molded foam-backed carpet headliner that covers the interior roof and side panels. The carpet provides a finished appearance, reduces noise and condensation, and protects your cargo from rubbing against the raw fiberglass surface.

The headliner is permanently bonded to the shell during manufacturing – it’s not a removable panel. If you need to clean the carpet, use a damp cloth with mild upholstery cleaner and allow it to air dry completely.

Each Astro ships with three identical keys that operate both side door latches. The lock cylinders use standard automotive-style key blanks that can be cut by most locksmiths or hardware stores.

Your shell’s key code is stamped on a metal tag attached to one of the keys. Keep this tag in a safe place separate from your truck – a locksmith can cut new keys from the code even if you’ve lost all the originals.

The stainless steel rotary latches and door hinges need a light coat of silicone spray lubricant every six months to prevent binding and corrosion. Spray the lubricant into the latch mechanism while rotating the handle through its full range of motion.

Avoid using WD-40 or petroleum-based lubricants on the weather stripping – these products break down rubber and cause premature cracking. If a door becomes difficult to close, check the weather stripping for debris or deformation rather than over-tightening the latch.

Yes, the primer-gray finish is designed to accept automotive paint without additional surface prep. We recommend scuffing the primer with 320-grit sandpaper, cleaning with wax and grease remover, then applying automotive-grade urethane paint in a dust-free environment.

For best results, use a paint gun rather than spray cans – professional paint application ensures proper thickness and UV protection. Most auto body shops can paint-match and spray the shell for $400-600 depending on your color choice.
